Silk Painting
While Nancy was hosting creative workships in her mother’s retirement residence, she met many residents who were hesitant to participate because of their unsteady hands or poor eyesight.
Nancy started teaching silk scarf painting to engage those residents because it is easy to do and is ideally suited for people with physical challenges.
Any one can paint a scarf. For a novice, the thought of painting is less intimidating when they learn their imperfections are not noticeable when their scarf is being worn.
Of the 40+ seniors Nancy has taught, the majority of them had never painted before. Watching their joy when they finished their first scarf and exclaimed “I’m an artist !?!” or their pride when their scarves were exhibited in the resident Art Show are treasured moments for Nancy.
Silk Painting began as a way of engaging more residents but it evolved into something more organic – a wonderful community. Enduring friendships developed as they learned this new artform together.
